On October 27, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR adopted the law "On the independence and fundamentals of the state structure of Turkmenistan," proclaiming the country's independence from the Soviet Union. However, in 2018, it was decided to move the official celebration to September 27 to emphasize the importance of this date and its significance for Turkmenistan's independence.
